Details about Waterside TTC Team in the Senior British League

Waterside claim British League Crown

The weekend of the 28/29th March saw the final weekend of matches in Division 5 south of the British League. The Waterside team comprising of Phil Handy, Matthew Daish, Zac Dowling, Mark Butler, Brian Vibart plus Artur Veeck Caltabiano and John McBeath knew that four points from a possible eight would see them crowned as champions of Division 5 South in the team’s first year of competition.

The team had built up a commanding points lead going into the final weekend of four matches, having already beaten their two closest rivals in previous rounds of matches. The first match of the weekend was against bottom of the table, London based Fusion table tennis club, where Waterside ran out comfortable winners 8-0. Waterside knew any sort of result in the next match against second placed Kingfisher Club from Reading would be enough to seal the title. This match was a far tougher prospect, with the Reading team having a number of top ranked juniors. Waterside got off to a bad start with Mark Butler losing to Joshua Gallen but after this initial result, Waterside never looked back and ran out eventual 6-2 winners with the only other loss coming from Zac, with him losing a very close match to another junior Gus Thomis.

With the title secured, the remaining matches were about ensuring that the team retained its unbeaten record for the season. The next match was against Foresters, where Brian Vibart made his season debut. Brian played superbly and won his matches with ease and enabled Waterside to cruise to another victory 8-0. The final match of season was against London Academy, again another team of promising juniors. Some very close matches were played but Waterside edged all the matches with Brian narrowly losing the only match, the final result being 7-1 to Waterside.

Waterside will now look forward to next season and the challenges of playing in Division 4. Thanks must go to Waterside Table Tennis Club and especially John Fox for all his help during the season.

Waterside at the Senior British League

This season saw the intriguingly named division 4 ‘south/east/west/’ take place at Filton College, Bristol.  This initially seemed an odd choice seeing as there were 3 teams from Sussex and 2 teams from London but it turned out to be a fine venue with excellent playing conditions while the Filton College staff and players kept […] Continue reading →
