Pimpled bat again!

A match full of uncertainty, especially with Dave Goodyer suffering with an injury which prevents too much movement.  It was going to be a tough match! However, our fears were dispelled as the Waterside H trio each gained 2 games plus the doubles against Lesley Jerram and Gerry White.  Once again, Tony Tidswell’s style (and pimpled bat!) had the opposition struggling, including Anne Longland, who he took to 5 sets, before finally succumbing to her, the player of the night.  Dave moved well, enjoying “opening-up” on occasions and confusing the opposition with his below-table-top level scoop shots.  Jeff grew in confidence as the evening progressed, effectively employing angled block defence, with rare attacking play.

Although there was a good deal of canny chopping and moving around the table, there were many instances of good, open rallies, where smashes were quickly returned in succession.  Counter-hitting was very good on both sides and home advantage paid off often.

A most pleasing evening and 7-3 result, which was rather flattering for Waterside H.

Hard-fought contest

The Waterside “H” squad of Dave, Colin & Jeff arrived in plenty of time for the match against Hedge End “B”, at their Social Club, and had to wait for a significant time for the home team to present themselves and set up the equipment. At least the surrounding were comfortable!

The warm-ups in no way reflected the playing styles once the matches got under way. Top-spin forehand-to-forehand and backhand-to-backhand shot in the warm-ups gave way to determined back-spun balls in the matches. There were some good attacking shots from both sides but players were generally trying to be really canny with their returns.

The man of the match was Martin Cheffy, who won all 3 of his games, but Dave Goodyer was the best and most consistent of the Waterside “H” team, winning 2 of his games, besides winning the doubles along with Colin. Dave’s unique style of out-of-sight, below-the-table returns cause problems for the opposition, because they cannot see what effect he is giving to the returned ball!

Colin & Jeff both out-played the “Barna bat” player Terry Mills, to secure a well-earned draw.

A question of styles

It is always difficult playing another team from the same club, especially if opposing players have previously sparred with each other on several occasions on practice nights at Testwood. Each player knows the others’ weaknesses and need to produce something special to win the games. With Wojciech playing for the G side, it seemed like three games were already accounted for, but wily Tony took him all the way to five sets, losing a close 8-11 in the final set. The pimpled rubber was causing problems again! Clearly Wojciech was the man of the evening, taking all his three (plus the doubles, along with Eddie) games. The other games were closely contested and a ‘draw’ would have been a good result for the H team, but Eddie was playing consistently well to deny that result, helping his G squad record another 6-4 win.

Man of the Match

Another clash between Waterside and Southampton West sides, saw Waterside H team ending the match win a 7-3 win. Both Dave and Tony won all three of their games but Super Tony’s scores were most emphatic! Tony annihilated the opposition by winning each game in three straight sets, not allowing any opponent to score more than 7 points in any one set. Clearly, the pimpled rubber played havoc with his adversaries’ attempts to spin and chop their way through his defences. Dave’s games were skilfully won through his greater consistency, skill and guile. This was a well-earned result, with a late finish following several long games, and moves the squad up the Division 2 results’ table.

Closer than the score suggests

Tuesday night’s match at Cavendish Hall resulted in a 7 – 3 win for St Denys. Although 7 out of the 10 games only went to 3 sets, the result could/should have been more favourable as St Denys had an under-strength side and, although their substitute played well, we (Dave, Jeff and Colin) just needed a couple of games against the old stalwarts, Keith Hewitt and Barry Dobson, to obtain a draw. Keith played his usual mixed style of long/short services, with/without spin to a variety of places on the table, playing a very defensive game and waiting for his opponent to make the first mistake, which we invariably obliged! Barry played his unique style of early blocking, with angled bat, to move his opponent around the table. Waterside members each came close to getting the better of Barry, who is more vulnerable to more aggressive, attacking play, but he knew his equipment and venue better.

A late start (7.40pm) inevitably meant a late finish (10.40pm), even though the games were generally short. Of course there was the welcome brief refreshment break, mid-evening. Winning just one game each does not help the Waterside H team members’ averages. We cannot be faulted for our efforts though.

Waterside H rollercoaster

We were under no illusions that playing in Division 2 this season was not going to be as straightforward as our matches in Division 3 were last season!  Last Wednesday’s match (5th October) against an experienced South West L side brought us down to earth, with a 9-1 drubbing, with Colin French winning the solitary match against Lee Rosamund.

It was with some trepidation that we witnessed the three South West J youngsters warming up before last Monday’s (10th October) fixture. Perhaps it was our unorthodox play, not playing an open game, but varying the direction of chop-returned balls and having, perhaps, greater concentration, leaving the opposition to have a go at offensive strokes that led to their downfall.  As the season wears on, that team of youngsters will undoubtedly improve and choose their attacking strokes more circumspectly, with greater effect.  We were flattered by the result and the match was closer than a cursory glance might suggest.  One curious feature occurred in the doubles’ result:  the match went to 5 sets, with the first four games closely fought and swinging one way then the other.  However, the fifth set was surprisingly won 11-0, to clinch the game.

So, we reversed last week’s score, with a 9-1 win.  Tony Tidswell has the team’s highest average, at 66.7%, with Dave and Jeff on 50% and Colin on 33.3%, commendably gained in last week’s strenuous conflict.
