Experience vs youth!

Matt was unwell so we gave away even more than normal in the difference in average age in our encounter with the enterprising youngsters of Southampton West N. For them, Alan Dawson was very quick on his feet and gave a good account of himself.

If we (Bob and Tony) had not turned the doubles around after a difficult start, the defeat would have been worse. There were good games throughout, and it was neck- and- neck for most of the evening, only for us to lose out in the last two games, when youth got the upper hand. In the end, Soton West N 6 x Waterside L 4. Get well soon, Matt!

Waterside L vs New Community A

We were able to welcome a familiar sight (and sound!) back to Testwood for this one. It was good to see Brian Hayes enjoying his game again.

Boy, can this guy play. He was too hot for any of us to handle that’s for sure. We had to therefore concentrate on picking up points from the others. Ian Shapey is becoming much better known to us and the highlight of our evening was Matt beating him in three straight, primarily through some scintillating forehand attack. In the end, the result was 6-4 to New Community A. So we managed to secure some more points in our bid to creep up the table.

Waterside L signs of improvement

If it were not for Tony going down 15-17 in the fifth set after having two match points we could have won! In the end Matt Moody stepped up to the plate and played with poise and confidence and salvaged a deserved draw in the last game against Soton West O.

After two quite serious defeats, this performance proves that we may be in the right place after all. An improved performance all round, but we’ll keep our feet on the ground and take every game us it comes…..

An eerie start for Waterside L

Imagine, if you can, a hall as big (nearly) as ours at Testwood with only one table in the middle. That’s how it was on Tuesday night, and eerily quiet was it!

Tricky game this one, playing against a newly relegated team. They just had too much nous for us and we just made too many mistakes. Thanks to Alan (Bone) we avoided a complete whitewash. He took games in his singles and doubles. And Matt Moody’s first game in the third division was very encouraging; he showed that it it won’t be long before he will be be able to give as much as he gets.
